Objectives/activities:

The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice (JCFJ) belongs to the Maltese Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit order). Its mission is to link the service of the Christian faith with the promotion of social justice, to disseminate Gospel values and the social teachings of the Church, to train and form influential agents towards Christian social commitment, and to ensure presence, insertion and involvement among the grassroots. It works to support activities aimed at promoting social justice, to reflect on, raise consciousness and seek solutions to social problems and injustice in the light of the Christian faith.

The Formation/Reflection branch, made up mostly of non-Jesuits, organises and runs courses, focus groups, spiritual exercises with a social theme, public lectures, contributions to the media and at times action on a specific issue involving social justice. It reflects on current issues and receives ongoing formation. Members of the Insertion branch (the Jesuit community living at Zejtun) ensure Jesuit presence, witness and contact with the grassroots as a way of empowering them and integrate their experience in their reflection and action in promoting social justice. In Zejtun, the Paulo Freire Institute aims to bring the fruit of reflection into practice in the community, through education and the organisation of various activities.

The Centre has already shown practical commitment in favour of asylum seekers and refugees . Migration, and its darker dimensions of racism and xenophobia, is one of the priority areas of the whole Society of Jesus. Together with the Jesuit Refugee Service, both on the local and the European level, it has also participated in international initiatives. In fact, the Centre is presently the national focal point in Malta for the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC). In this regard, the Centre is responsible for issuing a yearly RAXEN (European Racism and Xenophobia Information Network) report, in which local data on racism and xenophobia in the areas of employment, education, legislation, housing and Maltese society in general are collected.

Two Jesuits killed in Moscow

Two Jesuits, Fathers Otto Messmer and Victor Betancourt,
killed in Moscow

On Saturday 25 October, Father Victor Betancourt, an Ecuadorian Jesuit working in the St. Thomas Philosophical, Theological and Historical Institute in Moscow, was killed in his home. Two days later, after returning from a trip abroad, Father Otto Messmer, Superior of the Russian Region, was also killed in the same place. On Tuesday 28 October, alarmed by the fact that he hadn’t heard from the two men, a fellow Jesuit who lives in another community went to visit them at home. On finding the dead bodies, he immediately contacted the police.

The police investigations have yet to come to any firm conclusions about cause of these violent deaths.
