Br Joe Vella has passed away

Today we saw the departure from this world of Br Joe Vella, at the age of 92.

Last week Br Joe was taken to the hospital suffering from heart problems and today at 11.50am he surrendered his soul to the Lord.

His funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, 2nd December, 2016 at Loyola House, at 3.30 pm. Burial will be at Naxxar cemetery.

Joe was born at Birkirkara on 14th March 1924 to Edward Vella and Pauline nee Galea.

Between 1943 and 1946 he was in the Army, then worked for five months with the Dockyard Police and in 1947 started work as a telephone operator in the central exchange where he remained till 1952, right until the time he responded to his Jesuit vocation. He arrived at Naxxar and began his Postulancy and began the noviciate on 3rd January 1953.

Br Joe made his first vows on 6th January, 1955 and his Tertianship at Manresa, Gozo in 1962. He pronounced his Last Vows in the Society on 2nd February, 1963 at the College.

Br Joe's service as a Jesuit brother was diverse, working in the carpentry at Loyola House, followed by almost twenty years at St Aloysius' college as Sacristan, Receptionist, Infirmarian of the Community and of the boys, in charge of workers, Beadle of Brothers, in charge of Tuckshop and in charge of wardrobe.

Between 1976 and 2011 he was Sub Minister, Porter and Sacristan to the Jesuit community at Xavier House in Valletta, as well as Minister (1979-2005) and House Consultor (1979-2006).                 

Br Joe served as Prefect of health between 1979-2005 and Treasurer between 1984-1988. He helped in house duties between 2006 – 2011

Following which Br Joe joined the Ministry of Prayer at Naxxar, where he lived till his admission into Mater Dei last week.

May the Lord grant him eternal rest, after so many years of generous service as a Jesuit Brother.
