Restoration of 7 paintings in the sarria Church, floriana, by the great artist Matia Preti, is well underway. Their restoration is part of a project by Din l-Art Ħelwa, the National Trust of Malta, to mark the 400th anniversary in 2013 of the great artist Mattia Preti's birth.
The idea of this project was initiated by Sante Guido and Giuseppe Mantella, and is co-ordinated by Mrs Maria Grazia Cassar, Restoration Committee Member on the Council of Din L-Art Helwa. A visit some months ago by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Dr Anthony Pace and Dr Nathaniel Cutajar on site, confirmed the precarious state of the titular painting of the Immaculate Conception, and it was decided, with their approval to take immediate emergency action to prevent it from further damage.
The process to get sponsors to do the restoration work on the paintings at Sarria started in October 2009. As the scaffolding was up and the titular painting strengthened before it was taken down. The initial work of removing the woodworm (susa) from the back of the pictures and the wood frames was done in Sarria Church itself on the side of the confessional.
We are looking forward to the finalisation of the restoration of these works to their former glory.
