Xavier House in Valletta has ceased being a Jesuit Community residence on December 5, 2011 after almost 50 years. The decision to close Xavier House had been taken after a very long period of discernment first by an extended consultation and later by Fr. Provincial and his consulters.
December 5 was chosen because of its proximity to the feast of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the house. The closure ceremony was a very simple one: Fr. Provincial celebrated the Eucharist together with the members of the community and the ex-superiors of the house who are still alive and who were invited for this ceremony. This was followed by dinner for which the benefactors of the house were also invited.
It had been decided that the members of the community should leave more or less together. The first to leave was Fr. Joseph Buhagiar Bianco who left for his new destination, Mount St. Joseph, Mosta, on the evening of the following day, Sunday. Fr. Steno DeRaffaele left for Manresa House, Victoria Gozo on Monday morning.
Frs. Anthony Micallef, Konrad Grech and Alfred Micallef, the last superior of the house, had dinner together on Monday and they left in the evening but before closing the door for good they gathered for a moment in the chapel and prayed the Te Deum, thanking God for all the good that had been done through the community of Xavier House during the years of its service.
